Fiction. "In her debut novel, FROZEN VOICES, Lynne Heinzmann has performed magic beyond even the skills of Harry Houdini, one of her most delightful characters. Heinzmann pulls off an astonishing feat of literary legerdemain, resurrecting real people who, in February 1907, were passengers on the steamship Larchmont, a vessel which sank off the coast of Rhode Island, taking 137 souls down with her 'drowned, frozen, or scalded to death.' In giving voice and vitality to a group of these passengers, Heinzmann combines meticulous historical research with a humane and generous imagination. Readers will live and breathe with the four narrators of the novel, as we see them before, during and—for some—after the disaster. FROZEN VOICES weaves the characters and events aboard this doomed ship into a complex and spellbinding tale. In the end, readers are left with exactly the reactions that should follow such an act of wondrous conjuration we are amazed and deeply touched." —Hollis Seamon

Full disclosure - the author is a friend of my mother, which is why I bought this book. It's actually pretty good. Heinzmann has taken four groups of individuals, real people, who really sailed on the coastal steamer Larchmont, which sank off of Rhode Island in 1907. One of them was peripherally connected to the great Harry Houdini, and she uses this to link all of them, showing a picture of what happened before the ship sank.
In an example of truth being stranger than fiction, one of the female victims of the wreck had a soap-opera-worthy life prior to the disaster, involving a marriage for money and abandonment. This was really quite an interesting look at a time not-so-long gone.

Frozen Voices Lynne Heinzmann 9780898233506 Books Reviews
This book interested me because I grew up on the east coast and the ocean is a powerful and integral part of life here, but what hooked me was the character development in Frozen Voices - outstanding! I found I could relate to each of these people on some level, and between that and knowing that these were real people leading ordinary lives but in an earlier time gave me an emotional connection to them and consequently, their story. It was a thoroughly engaging read start-to-finish (which came too quickly, as I was happily immersed in the time period and lives of the people that eventually converged on the ill-fated steamer, the Larchmont!).
Fantastic book. You can tell that Heinzmann did her homework on this one. She found actual people who were on the Larchmont when it sank and crafted stories about how they all came to be on the ship on that fateful night when it sank in Block Island Sound, just off the coast of Rhode Island. She did an amazing job weaving the stories of these individuals together, and weaving in what was going on in Boston-Providence at the time. Bravo, Lynne Heinzmann!
I have had the pleasure of hearing the author read from her first work and I look forward to purchasing on . This author is gifted in character development and bringing the reader, (listener, in this case) into the world of the passengers and the mystery of whom we will cheer for in survival and whom will we pay our sympathies. What seems to be a straightforward collision at sea in the headlines is so much more. I look forward to the availability to share this unique story with others interested in mystery, adventure, suspense and incredible historical fiction. Moreover, what became of the captain?
This book is a treasure of New England's Block Island surrounding areas. Fascinating story and history. Captivating, couldn't put it down!
Frozen Voices is a beautiful and sad story. To be able to "meet" all the characters was profoundly intriguing and inspiring! This story was superbly written, and hard to put down!
I love this genre and this book did a great job weaving history with fiction. Great character depth and you could feel the emotion when the actual tragedy struck. I can't wait to see what other stories Lynne brings to light!!
I think that in addition to accurate factual information, good historical fiction gives one a feeling for the period and a greater understanding of people whose lives were impacted by historical events. By those criteria, Ms. Heinzmann's novel is a GREAT piece of historical fiction. She gives vibrant voices to four who were on the steamship "Larchmont" as it plunged into history as the "Titanic of New England" in 1907. I highly recommend it to history buffs and those you just love a good story!
