There are many views on racism today in America. It pervades politics and the media constantly. It just seems to always be in the face of Americans.
While there are tons of topics related to race and stereotyping however, there is one issue, that above all others, seems to break out even in the most mild mannered of “non” racists…interracial relationships.
For some reason, even in the 21st century, interracial relationships are not widely accepted in America. When it’s broken down further however, that racial tone seems mostly to reflect around a black and white relationship.
There just doesn’t seem to be the anger around other races. Interracial relationships involving Caucasians with Hispanics or Asians seem overwhelmingly to get a pass. The same can often be said of Caucasians and Indians.
That’s not to say racism doesn’t exist within those scenarios. There are many traditional families who frown upon relationships outside of one’s race, but no more so than same race couples dating outside of one’s religion. But on the surface, and in the ever important role of public opinion, those relationships seem to get a pass.
But a white and black relationship seems to send people into a frenzy. At least it does here in America. Having traveled throughout Europe, that same frenzied American attitude is nonexistent.
But here in America, it’s very real. Oh, the public might not be vocal about it, but as a black man married to a white woman, there are times when we can feel the disdain people in public have when they see us.
It’s such a strange dynamic…and the stereotypes run amuck, varying widely depending on a person’s perception of who we are.
For example, out at a nice dinner, getting the car valeted, the thought from those around us might be, “Look at that uppity nigger taking one of our pretty white blondes.”
Then again, if we head to a club, there are those who might think, “What a shame. Such a pretty blonde. Too bad she’s ghetto.”
But here’s the crazy part, those racist thoughts don’t necessarily come from white people. Blacks, especially women, can be far worse. My experience has been that black women have a special kind of hatred for white women attached to black men.
Now of course that’s not the case with every black woman. Just like not every white person has racist thoughts about my interracial relationship. But the fact remains, that there are those who do.
One could even make the case that I am making stereotypical comments here about black women. But that’s the realism behind stereotyping and racism, our experiences are what guide us…and that’s ‘Nothing But The Truth.’
